Memorial Day has come to mean many things over the years. Considered to be the unofficial start of summer, it’s a great day to hang out with friends and family, to spark up the barbecue, or to simply enjoy good times under the bright sunshine. But through all the fun and excitement, we have to make a point to consider the real reason for this holiday—to honor and remember the brave who died while serving the country and protecting the freedoms that we enjoy every day. On this final Monday of May, take the time to think about those who made the ultimate sacrifice. If your town has a parade or special event to commemorate the day and you haven’t attended in many years, check it out—it’ll probably have an added bonus of bringing back a lot of pleasant childhood memories.
And if something that official isn’t an option, there’s no better way to honor those who served than enjoying the freedom that they sacrificed to protect. Go outside, breathe the fresh air, hike through the wilderness, go sailing or take a long stroll. We can never offer enough gratitude to those who we now remember. It takes only a moment of meditation or reflection. There will still be plenty of time in the day for the food, drinks and revelry.
