As today is National Ice Cream Day, we’ve taken a few moments to celebrate that classic of all frozen treats. Long ago our options were limited to the Neapolitan standbys of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, but now there’s countless choices out there from crazy artisanal flavors to updates on the basics. In commemoration of this sweetest of days, we asked around the office to share some of our favorite flavors. We’d love to hear yours too! Hit the comments to let us know your go-to flavors for this always awesome summer desert. And also tell us…are you a cone or a bowl kind of person?
Christopher:
My favorite ice cream would be peach. It reminds me of when I was little and spending time with my grandparents in the summer. My grandmother would pick fresh peaches and then churn homemade ice cream. We would then sit outside by the pool and enjoy the warm nights together with the cool treat she made.
Nicole:
I looooove ice-cream! But, if I could only choose one flavor I’d have to go with coffee ice-cream. My mother is such a coffee lover and would always order that flavor when I was younger. Definitely reminds me of our time together! J
Ashley:
Watermelon Ice – it tastes like summer and it has these amazing sugar “seeds.” Only downside, it must have some serious dye in it to get it that beautiful red and green color.
Trevor:
My favorite ice cream in LA this summer are two scoops from Salt&Straw—one Honey Lavender and the other Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. It may not sound complimentary but I promise you these flavors work perfectly together!
Brooklyn:
Peppermint ice cream is my favorite! There used to be this old fashioned ice cream shop in Pasadena I would go to when I was little which had the best peppermint ice cream… it had little pieces of peppermint and the ice cream was extra creamy. Haven’t found anything that compares.
Jade:
Fragola Gelato – reminds me of Italy and several trips where I tried over and over to pronounce the Italian word for strawberry and just couldn’t get it right. I should have switched to pesca (peach) or mango (mango).
Claire:
I love any flavor with something crunchy in it. My current favorite is called raspberry chocolate crisp, from a little creamery in LA. It’s made with fresh berries so it has a real authentic flavor and the dark-chocolate covered rice crispies give it a perfect crunch. I get a scoop of lemon curd along with it, to balance the sweet with something tart! Then I walk down to the beach to watch the sunset with my summer treat.
Deanna:
Coffee ice cream… my grandma would make me have a scoop for dessert every time I visited her!
Megan:
Soy & Dairy-Free Chocolate Coconut Milk “Ice Cream” because it’s a little better for you and it’s ALMOST better than the real thing! Plus, you can never go wrong with chocolate in general.
